Under the leadership of MS Dhoni, CSK has been a dominant force in the IPL. However, the 2025 season has seen a significant downturn. Despite Dhoni's return to captaincy following Ruturaj Gaikwad's injury, the team failed to find their rhythm. Aakash Chopra, analyzing CSK's performance, noted that the team's weaknesses were evident across various facets of the game. He remarked, "If I look at Chennai, I see weaknesses everywhere. How will you change things? You felt Mahi would turn it around, but it doesn't happen every time." 

MS Dhoni's Role and Performance

At 43, MS Dhoni's physical prowess has naturally declined. While he remains a tactical genius behind the stumps, his batting has shown signs of wear. In IPL 2025, Dhoni scored 196 runs in 14 matches with an average of 24.50 and a strike rate of 135.17, significantly lower than his 2024 season strike rate of 220.55.

Former India cricketer and 2007 T20 World Cup hero Joginder Sharma suggested that it might be time for Dhoni to "rest," given the team's poor performance. 

Team Management and Auction Decisions

Suresh Raina, a former CSK stalwart, has criticized the team's management for their auction decisions. He stated that Dhoni would never have allowed a poor auction, implying that the current squad's composition may not align with the team's needs.

The Need for Evolution

Aakash Chopra emphasized that CSK's traditional approach to the game may no longer be effective in the modern T20 landscape. He pointed out that the team's playing style hasn't adapted to the current demands of T20 cricket, stating, "This team didn't change their playing style."
